Small trackside details can make a surprisingly large difference to a model railway. Our new OO gauge drainage catchpits are designed to add one of those easily overlooked features that helps a lineside scene feel properly engineered and believable.
Why include trackside drainage?
On the real railway, drainage is essential for moving water away from the track formation and helping to protect the ballast and surrounding ground. Catchpits provide access points within that drainage system and can often be found positioned beside running lines, around stations, in cuttings and close to other lineside equipment.
They are small components, but adding several along a section of track introduces the kind of repeated infrastructure detail that gives a layout more depth.
Designed for easy installation and finishing
Each catchpit is made from two separate pieces: a recessed base and a slotted grille. Keeping the parts separate makes them easier to paint and weather before final assembly.

The coloured option combines grey bases with dark grilles for a ready-to-use appearance. The unpainted version is supplied in Bone White PLA, providing a neutral base for your own colour scheme.
Ideas for installing them on your layout
For the most convincing result, recess the base into the surrounding ballast or scenery so that the grille remains accessible at surface level. Before fixing anything permanently, place several catchpits beside the track and check their spacing from normal viewing angles.
Concrete greys work well for the base, while gunmetal, dark steel or black can be used on the grille. A thin dark wash will settle into the slots and bring out the detail. Adding a little earth colour, fine ballast dust or subtle green weathering around the edges can help blend each catchpit into the surrounding landscape.
Fix the finished parts using a small amount of model-safe adhesive, taking care not to fill the grille openings.
A useful detail for modern and traditional layouts
Because drainage infrastructure appears throughout the railway environment, these catchpits can work across a wide range of layout periods and locations. They are particularly effective when combined with cable troughing, cabinets, signals, fencing and other lineside details.
Like all Ignite 3D products, the catchpits are designed and manufactured in the UK. As FDM-printed components, fine layer lines and small manufacturing variations may be visible, particularly before painting.
